Sustainability in entrepreneurship, central mission of EYE Canarias

Sustainability in entrepreneurship, central mission of Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs Canarias
18 July 2023

The sustainability of businesses and new ventures is a roadmap from the European Union to build fairer societies, a greener planet and a more resilient economic fabric. From Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs (EYE), this factor has become one of its pillars, with the clear objective of ensuring that beneficiaries find support, references and resources with which to access more sustainable business models.

From Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs and, more specifically, from the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands work has been done to generate synergies that guide new entrepreneurs and those already established in their search for examples and support. An example of this is the activity that was carried out in conjunction with the Tourisme project, dedicated to promoting sustainability in European tourism SMEs. In this case, some of our beneficiaries attended the activity held in Mynd Hotel Adeje to know what good practices they carry out in the field. Zero kilometre products, waste reduction and treatment or social support actions were some of the practices presented.

To this type of initiatives are added the synergies developed with the Enterprise Europe Network in the Canary Islands (EEN), which is part of an international network where they address opportunities associated with sustainability in all its dimensions, such as social, environmental or economic, among others. In this way, once an EYE experience is completed, it is possible to continue the itinerary of a company established through the internationalization and support actions provided by the EEN.

Likewise, for new entrepreneurs, sustainability counts and although it is a more assimilated and integrated factor in their business plans, they also have resources to take it further. In fact, recently there was an activity of presentation of the EYE exchanges in the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. This action was carried out with the help of the regional portal for entrepreneurship Entrepreneurship in the Canary Islands, an initiative of the Directorate-General for Economic Promotion of the Government of the Canary Islands. From it, relevant information is offered to take the first steps, as well as information on points of support, but they also host a specific network for economic initiatives green o social.

These collaborations between regional initiatives strengthen the commitment to sustainability, while enriching the experience of the people who join the program. The offer of resources is not enough, therefore, from Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs assistance is also offered to guide in the search and selection of information, maximizing as much as possible the chances of success of the new venture, or opening new ways with which to make more competitive to those companies already established.
